Twitter is a powerful social networking tool and search engine in which you can easily find the current trend, information, news about virtually any topic.

The possibility of reaching hundreds of millions of leads through a free social media platform sounds exciting, right? But where do you start and how do you actually generate engaging content that people will want to interact with?

Where to start?

Your profile: Your display picture will be one of the first things people see from you. So it important to select a picture that meets the purpose you are on twitter for. Make Sure Your Profile Communicates What You’re About, write a bio that informs people who you are and what your business does. This way, people will know what kind of content to expect from you and whether or not you’re someone they want to follow.

What to tweet?

Most users think of social media as a tool to promote themselves or their content or product, however twitter, as Gary Vaynerchuk says is the cocktail party of the internet, you need to join conversations, connect with others and add value to the discussion.

You can consider four types of tweets that you should be posting to Twitter and only one of these four should be used as a means to communicate your own brand.

· Content Link — a shortened weblink to a content that you have created, like a blog post, video use this to draw your audience to longer content and avoid TL;DR. You can use a url shortner such as bitly

· Knowledge Byte: use this tweet as an opportunity to reinforce that you are an expert in your area,. Remind people that you are in the know, by sharing statistics, facts, tips that can help your audience.

· This is the type of tweet that is most valued by your audience and gets retweeted the most.

· Informal questions to engage your audience, these can be related your business or something trivial as Sometimes you what to have a informal conversation to engage your audience.

An informal question could be as simple as Do you pronounce ‘scone’ to rhyme with ‘cone’ or ‘gone’? a simple question like can instantly engage your audience.

· Connect with retweets: While you want to share original content on twitter, it is also important that you retweet other’s content with current attribution. The reason you are on twitter is to build your network. You can read and respond to tweets from other users to build rapport. Complimenting people and retweeting other’s tweets can go a long way in building your network.

When to tweet ?

This depends on your audience, and their expected behavior. Most people check twitter in-between things.

If your audience is in business, their day is ruled by calls, meetings and appointments. Most of such meetings start or end at the hour or half-hour mark. For instance, 10–10:30 am or 3–4 pm, etc. You can adopt a posting strategy where you can schedule tweets to go out a few minutes before or a few minutes after the top of the hour.

Also, in cities commuters check twitter during their commute this will be morning 7–9 am and in the evening 5–7 pm.

Scheduling tweets around these times would have a better chance that it will popup at the right time on your target’s phone.
